Day 10

Today, a day before the play, emotions are bumping and everything has a good form.
We started working with the kids putting up the coconut leaves inside where the stage will take place.
Very efficiently the kids tied up the leaves around the walls and with the help of the lights we created a much better ambiance.
With a beautiful present, the kids gave us a massage that balanced out the energies.
The theater teachers worked on diction details, body language and the handling of puppet.
Tomorrow is the big day!!!!

Amanecer

Day 9

Today the day started very early. At 5:30am the kids from the group Ok-Che –stick leg- of Yaxunah got together in the Cultural Centre to go and watch the sunrise at the ruins. They walked up to the entrance of the ruins, put up their stilts and they film along Sebas a representation in stilts about Sac-be to Yaxunah.
I met with the girls at 9:30am at the CCC and we went by bike to the ruins along Manuel (Coordinator of the CCC) also with Sebas and other kids that wanted to come along. Once we were in the ruins we went to the temple of “Pastel,” were according to the accounts this is where the aluxes live.
There we explored and rehearse a bit with the puppets whiles Sebas was shooting and collecting images. To see the girls interact with their puppets in their natural surroundings, and see them play one idea after the other was so gratifying and fun, they were doing it alone, naturally, I was just in charge of encouraging them.
After we went to explore the area, without the puppets and with the other kids that were running around, they were appearing and disappearing between the mounds, temples and trees.
We got all toghether again at 4pm at the CCC and we went right to business: To rehearse.  We split by the different fragments of the play.
Because there is a weather warning so we can not rehearse outside because the play will take place in doors due to the weather.
This made us re-planned the show and more than anything the stage design.  Up to now we had not thought about it.  But everything started to become more clear throughout the day, the puppets got used to the new space and Abraham will work with coconut leaves that were collected by the kids and they will be used for the stage. During the middle and the end of the day we weave together what we had been rehearsing alone, inside the palapa. We saw that we advanced a lot between the first and second rehearsal.
The path is clear.
And certainly the ruins motivated and inspired all of us.

Dia 8

Comenzando a hacer la escenografía

Erik escribiendo en el Cenote

Aluxes casi listos

Day 8

Today we started the day with a rewarding massage and stretching session.  We explained the importance of these before and after excersing, we emphasized this because here the kids practice stunts in stilts and a lot of the times they train by themselves.  The exercises were in twos in order to work integration, rhythm, partnership and also to feel more comfortable with their own bodies and others. After we split in groups:
Edel went out with the older kids to do pinhole photography around town (with the cans that they had prepared prior to the excursion) and also around the CCC.  They photographed the puppets and the aluxes surrounded by bushes and trees because of the technique the portraits look mysterios and alchemical.

Sebas went to the Cenote to work with the kids that participated in the shooting, he asked them to write about how they felt when went in the cenote, the kids responded very well, they sat alone in different places, they let themselves be taken by the energy and humidity of the place, you could see that they were concentrated and in peace. They wrote everything in Spanish but they recorded in their mother tongue.
Parallel to him Abraham continues working on the puppets, fixing and modifying what the kids had done.  He is always surrounded by kids that want to help him or by aluxes yelling “doctor, doctor I just lost and arm!”
Last but not least Fernando and I are in charge of the rehearsals of the different fragments of the play.
The kids are very able, anything that we propose to them, they solve it and surpass it easily, but in this day we all agree that the energy was low and disperse, I think it has to do with the space, it isn’t easy to keep them focus in such a big space, full of plants, butterflies, kids that come and go, etc. However they are always ready to work and we can see that everything is taking form.

After recess, during meditation we worked on making two collective mandalas, the results were great explosions of forms and colors.  When we were finishing there was a black out and a storm was coming, this was very limiting so Fernando decided, being right, to stop the day right there. Everyone run home under the first drops of rain.

Día 7

Ensayando títeres: "El chamán y el gringo"/Rehearsing with the puppets "The Shaman and the gringo"

Foto estenopeica en el cenote/Pinhole photography in the Cenote

Abraham y los niños terminando los títeres/Abraham and the kids finishing the puppets

Vito enseñandole variantes a las niñas con los aluxes/Vito teaching the girls the variants with the aluxes

Comienzan a trabajar con los zancos/They start working with the stilts

-----------------------------------
My day started at 4:30 am, I went to take Ale to the bus terminal in Piste, a town close to Yaxunah, when we went out the starts were still shining strong and in the horizon we could see that a storm was brightening the travelling clouds.  It was an emotional farewell and the team and I will miss her a lot, Alejandra is a woman that integrates, that listens and helps, an artist that works in community and for community, I am sure she would have been very inspired by what the kids did today.

A cold is trying to weaken some of us, but it didn’t stop us and we kept creating and working till we found feet and head to what the kids are creating.  We started with our body warm up that ended up being a dance class and it turned out to be a success, dancing to the rhythms of cumbia and hip-hop we losen up the hips and the body became relaxed releasing endorphins that certainly were the best antidote for the cold. The group seem very interested and their coordination I am sure it will be better in a couple of months, their body expression is changing and they are learning how to navigate the space.  After all the dancing theater time arrived and I took them to see the stage where we are going to have the play on Saturday and we asked them to play with the dimensions and depth, immidiatly we started to play with the puppets that day by day start becoming legendary characters from Yaxunah.

Asael and Erick two of the youth that are in charge of 2 out of the 7 puppets.  Had a good rehearsal and exploration of the the space and language, their voice level is good for today but tomorrow we will work on projection and volume.  It was a very productive afternoon, we advanced a lot, Victor, Bertino’s brother worked on the story that they wrote yesterday with Ale.  This story became a very important part of the play Sac-be hacia Yaxunah.  It is one of the first scenes, written and directed by the kids and youth of the community, with this we can get them to create, direct and produce their own pieces of art.  The day was very demanding; today was the day when we had to cut ideas out and weave the rest all together.  Now we have a more detailed panorama of what we need so that the rhythm of the play can flow.  Talking with Victoria (Vito) we were able to identify the groups and that made it easier to move forward.

Vito worked ont the aluxes’ scene with the girls, who showed great ability and a lot of imagination, they created a whole game of voices, rhytms, movements, they explore the space, jumped around the bushes and hid behind trees.  They were very positive, focused, organized and creative; going at this speed tomorrow we will be done with the story of the 4 aluxes.  The women of Yaxunah are artists in all the meaning of the word and I feel very honored of working and sharing with them, and as well as feeling proud of Ale and Vito who feed their creative spirits and empowered them to raise their voices and express themselves.  The puppets are a very important part of this process, we all have learned from each other, and the surprise is mutual, they are surprised about what they can do with organic and inorganic materials and we are surprised by their dexterity to handle tools like machete, coha, knife, and the sticks; tools that they used in their plantations, also in carving masks and generally at their homes.  These kids know how to use their hands and with just a bit of stimulation of their imagination, creation is magical and magnificent.  Abraham is teaching them to explore their surroundings and collect organic materials, that way they are finding a new creative process.  He is guiding them in their own space, he teaches them a new way of looking and I am sure he is learning to see everything different just how it happens to me when I share time with the puppets makers.  The quality of the puppets is the almost the same as some international puppet companies that I know and this is the first time that they make them, I am so excited to see them finished. The vision that the group gets of its identity and surroundings is now deeper and fun, we can see it because two more kids and 2 more youth came to the centre to become part of the group, it is an honor for us to include them and share with them our knowledge and experience.  The group grows and the same way our desire to see these kids and youth in action on Saturday August 17 at 6:00 pm at the Centro Cultural Comunitario de Yaxunah (CCCY) Maia who is helping us with the production and making this ideas true besides all this she is our stage manager.  Today she went to put up the posters in different points of the community, the mill where everyday women go to grind their corn so after they can make us delicious tortillas made by hand.  I will say it again, the women of Yaxunah are artists, I am sure we will have a lot of the cooks as our audience on Saturday.

After the mill Maia continued going around in Betino’s tricycle, she tells me that in some streets kids helped her pushing the tricycle, they applied the C for compassion and this makes me so happy that kids are understanding and applying the three Cs: Creativity, Compassion and Courage.

During the closing circle we talked about some conflicts that took place during the day and were solved using the three Cs.  Peace is being practiced in Yaxunah and the arts are everywhere, the talent of the group is being re-dicovered and strengthen, we are ready for the last three days of exploration and rehearsals and ready for the third call.  We will be showing everything in the blog.

Sebastian and Edel are doing excellent work in visual arts.
The group is very interested in manipulating the cameras. Their looks make my mind fly and make me realized that in reality I don’t know the magnitude of their talent and their desire to create that each one of them shows in each activity.
Edel is a good mentor and the kids feel very comfortable with him, they open up and are very positive.  Being able to generate an image using a pop can shows them that they don’t need a lot of resources to be artists and generate a good quality photograph and with a more basic concept but none the less very authentic.

I’m sure that with Edel’s guidance and knowledge in this art, youth will be inspire to take more pictures and build a dark room to free the men’s washroom of the magic of photography.  Sebastian’s eye has an equally important role and it helps all of us a lot, his documentation of the whole process as well as his vision motivate us to keep working as a team and do a better job.
Dedicated and committed to his craft, he shares his talent, knowledge and disposition to teach youth everything he can in these two weeks, Besides working with the members of the group Ok-Che (stick leg) of Yaxunah, he is also collaborating with another youth group, who they met while playing soccer in the Plaza.
Now they are working on a project where mayan elders talk.  His confidence in the kids is taking root, lending them his camera and letting them shoot and shoot has given us a better understanding of what we are offering, what we are achieving and what can be done better. Without a doubt it was a very productive day as well as emotional. Kids and youth were asking me:
Gustavo –Has Alejandra arrived to her town?
Me – Not yet, right now she is in Cancun
Jesus – Is she far away from her town?
Me – Yes
Gustavo – She has to cross the border, right?
Me – Yes, two borders
Gustaavo – Which ones?
Me – The United States one and the Canadian One.
Jesus – Why is there borders?
Me- I don’t know we have to investigate.

And just like that many more conversations I had with the kids and youth asking about when Alejandra would be back. But she came to stay, they learned a lot with her and she left them a piece of her big heart.
All of the gifts (letters and drawings) that they made for her last night manifest the positive impact that her personality and her love for community generate.  We will miss you Ale but we will see you in October to celebrate the third anniversary of the CCCY.  Thanks again for sharing your talent and your heart.  And this is how one more day ends in a Sac-be to Yaxunah.
